UTSA Mourns the Loss of Ella Cahill, Beloved Fitness Student Coordinator and Campus Leader

It is with shattered hearts and profound sorrow that we share the passing of Ella Cahill—a beloved member of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Campus Recreation team and our dedicated Fitness Student Coordinator. Ella’s sudden departure has left a void not only in our hearts, but throughout the entire Roadrunner community, where her spirit, passion, and leadership touched countless lives.

Ella was more than a student coordinator. She was the heartbeat of UTSA Campus Recreation’s fitness program. Known for her unwavering positivity, tireless work ethic, and infectious energy, she led by example—uplifting those around her with words of encouragement, moments of genuine connection, and a passion for wellness that inspired peers and staff alike. Whether she was mentoring new student staff, designing group fitness classes, or simply lending an ear to a friend, Ella brought her full self to every moment.

As Fitness Student Coordinator, Ella played an integral role in shaping the campus wellness culture. She was deeply committed to helping students grow—not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Her leadership reflected a rare blend of competence and compassion. She had a vision for inclusivity and accessibility in fitness, striving to make the Rec Center a welcoming space for everyone, no matter their background, ability, or experience.

Outside of her role at Campus Rec, Ella was a dedicated student, a loyal friend, and a guiding light to all who knew her. She carried herself with grace and humility, always willing to go the extra mile for someone in need. Her peers admired her resilience, her boundless curiosity, and her radiant optimism that seemed to light up every room she walked into. Ella had a unique ability to make people feel seen, valued, and capable of becoming their best selves.

Her passing has sent waves of grief through our community, and while words feel painfully inadequate in this moment, we know that Ella’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she impacted. She leaves behind not only a remarkable body of work and service at UTSA, but also a legacy of kindness, inclusivity, and heartfelt connection.

The UTSA Campus Recreation team, along with the university community, is working closely with Ella’s family to honor her memory in a way that reflects the fullness of her life and the impact she had on all of us. In the coming days, a memorial will be held on campus, and details will be shared with all who wish to celebrate Ella’s life and legacy. Counseling and grief support resources are available for students, faculty, and staff who may need help navigating this time of deep loss.

To Ella’s family—we extend our most heartfelt condolences. Please know that Ella was cherished here. She was not just a colleague or a student. She was family. Her memory will forever be etched into the soul of our campus.

Rest in peace, Ella. You ran your race with courage, led with heart, and made the world brighter just by being in it. Your light lives on in every life you touched.
