Tupelo Mourns the Loss of Dr. Kenneth M. Kellum, Beloved Physician and Community Pillar

It is with deep sadness that the Tupelo community announces the passing of Dr. Kenneth Maurice Kellum, a highly respected nephrologist and a beloved figure across North Mississippi, who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 55.


A Life of Service and Dedication

Born on August 11, 1969 in Tupelo, Dr. Kellum graduated from Tupelo High School in 1987 before earning a bachelor’s degree in physics from Millsaps College in 1991. He completed his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1996 and went on to serve an internal medicine residency at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, followed by a nephrology fellowship at LSU Medical Center .

For 17 years, Dr. Kellum practiced with distinction at Nephrology & Hypertension Associates, affiliated with Magnolia Regional Health Center. His expertise in treating chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and other renal conditions touched the lives of countless patients in Tupelo and surrounding communities .


A Man of Compassion and Community

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Kellum was deeply involved in community service. A longtime member of West Main Church of Christ, he participated in mission trips to Honduras and Russia, and generously supported local causes such as the Shine Foundation and El Centro. He also taught pottery workshops at Fresh Farm, sharing creativity and joy with his neighbors

He married his best friend, Laura Riemer, on August 11, 1995, and the couple celebrated nearly three decades together with two children—Hannah (married to Lucas) and Caleb


A Legacy of Love and Leadership

Dr. Kellum is remembered as a man whose quiet strength and generosity defined his life. Loved ones recall his joy in fly-fishing, running, and supporting his children’s activities, as well as his love of storytelling and heartfelt medical care. His patients frequently spoke of him welcoming them like family and listening with empathy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Carl Kellum Jr. He is survived by Laura, his children, siblings Paul, Andrew, Patti, and Debbie, as well as extended family who carry forward his spirit and values .


Memorial Services and Support

Visitation for Dr. Kellum will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at West Main Church of Christ Family Center, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., with burial to conclude at Tupelo Memorial Park .

In memory of Dr. Kellum, memorial donations may be made to the Shine Foundation of Tupelo, the West Main Church of Christ Mission Fund, or the National Kidney Foundation


A Community Forever Changed

Across Tupelo and beyond, hearts are heavy with grief—but also filled with gratitude for a life that served as a model of healing and humility. Dr. Kenneth M. Kellum’s unwavering care, leadership, and faith left an indelible mark on his community. His passing reminds us to carry forward the compassion and generosity he embodied daily.

May his memory continue to inspire. May he rest in eternal peace.
