Three Injured in Early Morning Shooting at The Banks, Cincinnati Police Investigating
CINCINNATI — A night of entertainment turned to panic and confusion after a shooting erupted early Saturday morning in the heart of The Banks, one of Cincinnati’s most popular nightlife districts. The incident, which remains under investigation, left three individuals injured and transported to the hospital, according to the Cincinnati Police Department.
Shots Ring Out at The Banks
Authorities say the shooting occurred just after 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of Freedom Way and Rosa Parks Street, an area known for its bustling bars, restaurants, and foot traffic—especially on weekends. Witnesses described a sudden outbreak of gunfire followed by screams and crowds scattering in all directions.
“I heard four or five shots, back to back,” said Brandon Moore, a visitor from Northern Kentucky who was out with friends. “People started running, ducking into bars, getting behind cars. It was chaos.”
Officers who were already patrolling the area responded immediately to the sound of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Police began rendering aid until EMS arrived and transported the victims to local hospitals. At last update, all three victims were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation Underway
Cincinnati Police confirmed that an active investigation is ongoing. Crime scene tape cordoned off parts of The Banks as detectives worked into the early morning, collecting evidence and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or released any details regarding a possible motive. It’s also unclear whether the victims were specifically targeted or caught in the crossfire.
“Our officers responded quickly, but this is yet another concerning instance of gun violence in a high-traffic public area,” said Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge during a brief media update. “We are asking the public—anyone who saw something or has video—to come forward.”
The department is urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact the Criminal Investigations Section at (513) 352-3542 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Community Concerns
The shooting has sparked fresh concerns about safety in downtown Cincinnati, especially in areas like The Banks that attract large crowds of locals and tourists alike. The entertainment district is a staple destination for nightlife, located between the city’s major sports stadiums and the Ohio River.
City Councilmember Scotty Johnson, a former police officer, released a statement Saturday morning condemning the violence and calling for renewed efforts to curb crime in the area.
“We cannot allow senseless acts of violence to threaten the vibrancy and safety of our downtown,” Johnson said. “We owe it to our residents, our business owners, and our visitors to address this head-on.”
Increased Patrols and Preventive Measures
In response to the incident, CPD announced that patrols in and around The Banks will be increased for the remainder of the weekend. The department is also exploring additional preventive measures, including closer coordination with bar and venue owners to enhance security presence during peak hours.
“This incident is a reminder that even in our most celebrated spaces, we must remain vigilant,” said Chief Theetge. “But let me be clear—Cincinnati will not be defined by violence.”
A Shaken Yet Resilient Community
Though shaken by the shooting, many in the community are hopeful that swift action from both law enforcement and city leaders will help prevent future incidents.
“People come here to celebrate, to relax, to enjoy the riverfront,” said Heather Simmons, a bartender who was working when the shots rang out. “We don’t want fear to take over this space. We just want everyone to feel safe again.”
As police continue their investigation, the focus now shifts to healing and accountability—ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice, and that public confidence in safety at The Banks is restored.
