Shorewood Shooting Victim Identified as Victoria Truss; Suspect Killed After Police Chase and Shootout in Milwaukee
A tragic Fourth of July morning unfolded in Shorewood and Milwaukee as a violent shooting incident claimed the life of a 34-year-old woman, injured two others, and ended in a fatal exchange of gunfire between the suspected shooter and law enforcement officers. The victim has been identified by a friend as Victoria Truss, a beloved member of the local community whose life was cut short in what authorities are describing as a targeted attack.
According to police, the initial shooting occurred just after 8:00 a.m. Friday morning in a residential neighborhood in Shorewood, a quiet suburb north of Milwaukee known for its tree-lined streets and close-knit atmosphere. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, including Truss, another adult civilian, and a Shorewood police officer.
Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, Victoria Truss was pronounced dead. The second civilian and the injured officer were rushed to local hospitals. As of Friday evening, both are reported to be in stable condition.
Gunman Fled the Scene, Killed in Milwaukee Shootout
Authorities say the suspected shooter fled the scene of the initial attack, prompting a high-speed pursuit by multiple law enforcement agencies. The chase stretched into Milwaukee, where the suspect ultimately crashed his vehicle near Reservoir Avenue and Finlayson Street.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the suspect exited his vehicle armed and engaged officers in a gunfight. During the exchange, the gunman was fatally shot. He was declared dead at the scene. No additional officers were reported injured during the shootout.
While police have not publicly released the suspect’s name, sources close to the investigation say he was known to the victim and may have had a prior relationship with her. Authorities are currently working to confirm that information and to understand the motive behind the attack.
Community in Shock as Tributes for Truss Pour In
The death of Victoria Truss has left her family, friends, and the wider Shorewood community reeling. Described by loved ones as kind-hearted, intelligent, and full of life, Truss was known for her volunteer work, love for the arts, and close connection with her neighborhood.
“She had the biggest heart,” said longtime friend Jasmine Holloway. “Victoria was the kind of person who made everyone feel important. I can’t believe she’s gone.”
Neighbors gathered throughout the day near the site of the shooting, placing flowers and candles in her memory. Several community members expressed disbelief that such a violent act could occur in an area rarely associated with serious crime.
“This is a quiet place — nothing like this happens here,” said one resident. “It’s horrifying. Everyone is shaken.”
Police Investigation Underway
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT), led by the Waukesha Police Department, has taken over the officer-involved shooting portion of the case. The initial shooting in Shorewood remains under the jurisdiction of local authorities with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Investigators are collecting evidence from both crime scenes and reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic data to build a complete picture of what transpired.
“We understand how upsetting and traumatic this incident has been,” said Shorewood Police Chief Jonathan Hayes. “We are committed to a full and transparent investigation. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we ask the public to remain patient as we work through the facts.”

The injured officer, who has not yet been identified publicly, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The police department has thanked the public for the outpouring of support and stated that the officer is expected to make a full recovery.

A Community Left to Heal
As the investigation continues, Shorewood and Milwaukee residents are grappling with the ripple effects of the violence. Plans are already underway for a candlelight vigil in honor of Victoria Truss, with details expected to be shared in the coming days.
“This isn’t just a headline,” said family friend Marlon Banks. “This was a woman who mattered — to her friends, to her family, to her neighborhood. We want justice, but we also want people to remember who she was. Not just how she died.”
