Second Suspect Arrested in Deadly Tulsa Juneteenth Shooting; Darmontre Peters Charged with Murder
TULSA, OK — Authorities in Tulsa have announced the arrest of a second suspect in connection with the deadly shooting that occurred during the city’s Juneteenth celebration last month. On Tuesday, July 2, 2025, officers with the Tulsa Police Fugitive Warrants Unit arrested 21-year-old Darmontre Peters for his alleged involvement in the tragic incident that claimed one life and left several others wounded.
The shooting happened on the evening of Saturday, June 15, during a widely attended Juneteenth event held in downtown Tulsa. What began as a celebration of freedom and community quickly turned to tragedy when gunfire erupted amid a crowded area near the festival’s main stage just after 9:30 p.m.
Police say the violence was the result of an escalating dispute between two rival groups. The exchange of gunfire caused widespread panic as attendees fled the scene in fear. Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided aid to multiple victims. One man, 28-year-old Anthony “Tony” Reynolds, died at the scene from his injuries. Three others—two men and a teenager—sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Tulsa Police launched an immediate investigation, using surveillance footage, eyewitness interviews, and digital evidence to identify the suspects involved. The first suspect was taken into custody days after the shooting. On July 2, nearly three weeks later, authorities located and arrested Peters without incident.
Peters is facing charges of first-degree murder, multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is currently being held in the Tulsa County Jail pending arraignment.
“We want to assure the public that we will not rest until everyone responsible for this senseless act of violence is brought to justice,” said Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin during a press conference. “This was supposed to be a celebration of liberation, history, and community. Instead, one family is mourning a loved one, and others are recovering from trauma. We will not let this act of violence define the spirit of Juneteenth in Tulsa.”
The arrest of Peters comes as a relief to the grieving Reynolds family, who have been vocal in their calls for justice. In a statement, they thanked law enforcement and the community for their support, saying, “We are grateful to the Tulsa Police Department for their tireless work. Tony was a light in our lives, and while we can never bring him back, we are relieved to see progress toward accountability.”
Community leaders have also spoken out, urging unity and peace in the aftermath of the shooting. City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper called the incident a stark reminder of the challenges facing public safety and the need for proactive measures to prevent violence at community events.
“We need to continue investing in youth outreach, conflict resolution programs, and neighborhood engagement to stop these tragic cycles,” Hall-Harper said. “Our events should be places of joy and healing—not pain and fear.”
In response to the shooting, city officials have begun reviewing safety protocols for large public gatherings, including the presence of security personnel, surveillance enhancements, and crowd monitoring strategies. Organizers of the Juneteenth celebration have pledged to continue holding the event annually, with an even greater emphasis on community unity and security moving forward.
The Tulsa Police Department continues its investigation, and additional arrests have not been ruled out. Authorities urge anyone with information related to the shooting or individuals involved to contact Tulsa Crime Stoppers anonymously.
A candlelight vigil honoring the memory of Anthony Reynolds is scheduled for this weekend at Guthrie Green, where community members are expected to gather to reflect, grieve, and stand against gun violence.
For many in Tulsa, this tragedy has underscored both the fragility of life and the importance of community solidarity, particularly during moments meant to uplift shared heritage and resilience.
