Santa Monica Police Officer Ambushed Near Mall; Suspect David Hairston Faces Felony Charges
A frightening and violent confrontation shook the heart of Santa Monica on Wednesday afternoon, when a Santa Monica police officer was shot in what officials have described as a deliberate ambush attack. The shocking incident occurred near the popular Santa Monica Place mall, an area typically known for shopping, dining, and heavy foot traffic — not gunfire and panic.
According to police and court documents, the suspect has been identified as 31-year-old David Hairston, who now faces a slew of serious felony charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Hairston was apprehended after a swift and intense response by multiple law enforcement agencies.
The Ambush
The incident unfolded shortly after 2:30 p.m. on June 25, when officers were responding to a call regarding a suspicious individual behaving erratically near the corner of 2nd Street and Broadway, just steps from the mall. Witnesses reported seeing Hairston pacing with what appeared to be a firearm concealed under his clothing.
When officers arrived and attempted to approach him, Hairston allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire without warning. One officer was struck in the upper body and immediately fell to the ground. The area, bustling with locals and tourists, quickly descended into chaos as nearby pedestrians scrambled for cover.
Shoppers were rushed into nearby stores, some sheltering in fitting rooms and back offices as law enforcement quickly secured the area. Within moments, backup officers returned fire and were able to subdue and arrest the suspect without additional casualties.
Officer Injured, Recovering
The injured officer, who has not yet been publicly identified pending family notifications, was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. As of Thursday morning, he is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to recover, according to a statement from the Santa Monica Police Department.
Chief Ramon Batista held a press conference Wednesday evening, visibly emotional, saying:
“This was a calculated and cowardly act of violence against one of our own — someone who was simply doing his job, protecting this community. We are grateful for the swift action of our officers and the outpouring of support from the public.”
