Phillips County Grieves the Line-of-Duty Death of Deputy Brandon Gaede, 34

KIRWIN, KS — The town of Kirwin and the entire Phillips County Sheriff’s Office are grieving an immeasurable loss after the tragic death of Deputy Brandon Gaede, who lost his life in the line of duty on June 27, 2025. Deputy Gaede’s passing has sent shockwaves through the close-knit rural community he served with unwavering dedication, honor, and heart.

According to officials, Deputy Gaede, 34, was responding to a call involving a reported disturbance in a remote area outside Kirwin when he encountered a dangerous and volatile situation. Despite his training and caution, the incident quickly escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting that took his life before backup could arrive. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and details remain limited at this time. The suspect involved has been taken into custody.

Deputy Brandon Gaede’s sudden and tragic death has left his department, his family, and the Kirwin community reeling with grief. Flags across Phillips County have been lowered to half-staff, and a growing memorial of flowers, American flags, and handwritten notes now stands outside the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office as citizens pay tribute to the fallen deputy who gave his life in service of others.

Brandon was more than a uniform and a badge—he was a father, husband, son, brother, friend, and community protector. Born and raised in Phillips County, Brandon was a proud native son who knew nearly everyone in the region by name. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 2009 and went on to attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, fulfilling a lifelong dream of serving in law enforcement.

He joined the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and quickly became known as a calm, capable, and deeply compassionate deputy. His fellow officers say Brandon brought a rare combination of strength and empathy to the job. He handled tense situations with professionalism and resolve, but always led with kindness—often being the first to offer a word of comfort or a helping hand to someone in need.

“Brandon was a natural protector,” said Sheriff Wes Turner. “He loved this community. He treated people with respect, listened without judgment, and wore his badge with integrity. We have lost not only an exceptional deputy, but a dear friend and brother.”

Outside of law enforcement, Brandon was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Amanda Gaede, and their two young children, Wyatt (7) and Ellie (4). To them, he was a hero in every sense of the word—gentle, loving, and always putting his family first. He was known for his weekend pancake breakfasts, his playful nature, and his steady presence in every milestone and moment, big or small.

Amanda describes Brandon as her rock, her best friend, and a father whose love knew no bounds. “He gave everything to us and to his community. He never wanted recognition—just to make a difference.”

Brandon also gave back through volunteering as a youth sports coach and participating in community events, always finding time to support others despite the demands of his job. His presence in the community was one of strength, safety, and quiet leadership.

A public memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the Phillipsburg High School Gymnasium, followed by a full law enforcement honors funeral and interment at Kirwin Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 2, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

In honor of his service and sacrifice, a fund has been established for the Gaede family through the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, with donations helping to support Amanda and the children in the difficult days ahead.

As Kirwin and the greater Phillips County area come to terms with this painful loss, the memory of Deputy Brandon Gaede will remain etched in the hearts of those he served and loved. He gave his life to protect others—a legacy of courage, compassion, and commitment that will never be forgotten
