Milwaukee Man Arrested in Ambush-Style Shooting of Two Police Officers

MILWAUKEE, WI — A tense city is breathing a cautious sigh of relief following the arrest of 22-year-old Tremaine D. Jones, a Milwaukee resident accused of carrying out an ambush-style shooting that wounded two Milwaukee Police Department officers late Wednesday night, June 26, 2025. The arrest comes after a fast-moving investigation that drew intense public scrutiny and mobilized law enforcement resources at local, state, and federal levels.

The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of North 27th Street and West Capitol Drive. According to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, the two officers—both assigned to the department’s District 3 violent crimes task force—were responding to a call when they were suddenly fired upon from behind a parked vehicle. Surveillance video and eyewitness accounts indicate the attack was premeditated, with the suspect allegedly lying in wait before opening fire with a semi-automatic weapon.

The officers, a 36-year-old with nine years of service and a 29-year-old with five years on the force, were both struck multiple times. Despite their injuries, they managed to return fire and call for backup. They were rushed to Froedtert Hospital, where they underwent emergency surgery. As of Saturday morning, both remain hospitalized in stable but serious condition.

“This was a deliberate, cold-blooded attack on our officers—an act of cowardice,” Chief Norman said during a Thursday press conference. “We are thankful that they survived and we are even more grateful to have the suspect in custody.”

After combing through surveillance footage, analyzing ballistics, and following up on community tips, authorities identified Tremaine D. Jones as the prime suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and members of the Milwaukee Police Tactical Enforcement Unit, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Jones without incident at 2:15 a.m. Friday morning at a residence on the city’s north side. No weapons were discharged during the arrest, and authorities recovered a firearm at the scene believed to be used in the shooting.

Jones is now facing multiple charges, including:

  • Two counts of Attempted First-Degree Intentional Homicide of a Law Enforcement Officer

  • Use of a Dangerous Weapon

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

  • Recklessly Endangering Safety

According to court records, Jones has a history of felony convictions, including illegal firearm possession and drug distribution, which legally prohibit him from owning or using a firearm.

“This individual should not have been armed, should not have had the opportunity to perpetrate this type of violence,” said Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm. “He will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This city must not and will not tolerate ambushes on our police officers.”

News of the attack—and subsequent arrest—has sparked strong reactions across Milwaukee. Community leaders, elected officials, and residents have expressed outrage at the assault on officers, while also acknowledging the broader concerns over escalating gun violence in the city.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson released a statement Friday afternoon praising the quick arrest and pledging additional support for public safety initiatives.
“We are grateful to the brave officers who were wounded and to every law enforcement professional who worked tirelessly to bring this suspect into custody. We must continue working as a community to stop this cycle of violence.”

The Milwaukee Police Association also weighed in, emphasizing the ongoing risks officers face daily and calling for continued investment in officer safety, mental health support, and community partnerships.

A neighborhood candlelight vigil is planned for Sunday evening at the site of the shooting. Organizers say it will serve both as a show of support for the injured officers and as a call for unity in the face of senseless violence.

Tremaine D. Jones is expected to make his initial court appearance early next week. Prosecutors have confirmed that they will be seeking a high bond and may pursue additional federal charges depending on the outcome of the investigation.

As Milwaukee rallies behind its wounded officers and confronts yet another act of gun violence, city leaders stress the need for both accountability and healing. For now, though, the focus remains on recovery, justice, and reaffirming the community’s commitment to the rule of law.
