In Loving Memory of Mason Straeter — A Bright Light Gone Too Soon

It is with immense sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the tragic and heartbreaking news of the passing of Mason Straeter, a beloved young athlete and treasured member of the Rochester Youth Baseball League (RYBL). Mason’s life, though far too brief, touched the hearts of all who had the joy of knowing him. His sudden departure has left an unfillable void in the hearts of his family, teammates, coaches, friends, and the greater Rochester community.

Mason, just 13 years old, was more than a gifted baseball player—he was a shining example of sportsmanship, determination, and pure-hearted joy. With his ever-present smile and contagious enthusiasm, Mason lit up every dugout, field, and gathering he was part of. He was known not just for his skill on the diamond but for his humility, kindness, and unwavering support of his teammates. Whether cheering others on from the bench or sprinting the bases with unmatched passion, Mason embodied everything that is good about youth sports.

Born and raised in Rochester, Mason was a dedicated student, a loyal friend, and a loving son and brother. He loved the game of baseball from the moment he could walk, often seen with a glove in one hand and a bat in the other, dreaming of the big leagues. For Mason, baseball wasn’t just a sport—it was a language, a community, a source of joy. His teammates at RYBL affectionately referred to him as “The Heart of the Team,” and his absence on the field is already profoundly felt.

Mason’s coaches recall a player who led by example, who never gave up, and who made every practice better simply by being there. “He had that rare spark,” said Coach Brian Ellis. “He wasn’t just good—he was inspiring. Every kid looked up to him. Every adult respected him. He made us all want to be better.”

Outside of baseball, Mason was known for his love of animals, his fascination with space and science, and his boundless energy. He was often the first to volunteer for community service events and the last to leave the field after cleanup. Friends remember his quirky sense of humor, his ability to lift spirits with a single joke, and the compassion he showed to everyone around him.

As the news of Mason’s passing spreads, an outpouring of love and support has emerged from every corner of the community. Vigils are being organized at the baseball fields he once played on, with teammates and coaches donning his jersey number and decorating the dugout with flowers, photos, and messages of remembrance. RYBL has announced plans to retire Mason’s jersey and establish a scholarship in his honor—one that will continue to support and inspire future generations of young athletes who share Mason’s love for the game.

In this time of immeasurable grief, we extend our deepest condolences to the Straeter family—his parents, John and Rebecca, and his younger sister, Ella. The heartbreak they bear is beyond what words can express, yet the love and unity of the community stand strong around them.

To honor Mason’s legacy, let us remember the laughter he brought, the kindness he gave so freely, and the light he carried into every space he entered. Though his time with us was tragically short, his impact will be felt for years to come. Mason’s spirit will forever be etched in the field’s dirt, in the crack of a bat, and in every sunset over the outfield.

Rest in peace, Mason Straeter. You will never be forgotten. Your glove may hang still now, but your memory will run the bases of our hearts forever. ⚾💙
