In Loving Memory of Hallie Helgeson, 17 — Minnesota Teen Tragically Killed in Wrong-Way Collision in Wisconsin
It is with deep and heart-wrenching sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Hallie Helgeson, a vibrant and beloved teenager from Minnesota, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating wrong-way collision on Interstate 39/90 near DeForest, Wisconsin, on the morning of Friday, July 25, 2025.
At just 17 years old, Hallie had already left an indelible mark on her family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her loss has left her loved ones and the entire community grappling with profound grief, mourning not only the passing of a bright young woman but also the future she was meant to live.
A Radiant Light from the Start
Hallie was born on March 11, 2008, in Minnesota, and from the very beginning, she radiated warmth, joy, and light. With a natural gift for making people feel loved and included, Hallie had an infectious personality that drew others in. Her beautiful smile, unmistakable laughter, and open heart made her a friend to many and a comfort to those in need.
She attended Owatonna High School, where she was known not only for her academic curiosity but also for her involvement in music, drama, and volunteer work. Hallie had a deep love for animals, photography, writing, and spontaneous adventures with her closest friends. She had a quiet strength, a sense of humor that could lift anyone’s spirits, and a heart that cared deeply for others.
A Tragic Accident That Shattered Many Hearts
On the morning of July 25, Hallie was traveling with family when a wrong-way driver struck their vehicle on I-39/90 near DeForest, Wisconsin. The crash, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., claimed Hallie’s life at the scene and left others critically injured. Wisconsin State Patrol is actively investigating the incident, but early reports indicate that the other driver was traveling in the wrong direction at high speed, leading to the fatal head-on collision.
First responders on the scene fought heroically to save lives, but the injuries Hallie sustained were too severe. Her passing has sent waves of grief through both Minnesota and Wisconsin, with communities holding vigils and memorials to honor her memory.
Remembering a Life Full of Promise
Hallie is remembered by her loved ones as gentle yet strong, compassionate yet bold, and endlessly thoughtful and creative. She had dreams of attending college to study either veterinary medicine or journalism, combining her deep love of animals with her talent for storytelling.
Her parents, Jason and Marcy Helgeson, spoke through tears as they described her as “our sunshine… our reason to smile every day.” Her younger brother, Colton, called her his best friend and protector. Her friends shared memories of her thoughtful texts, funny videos, and the way she always knew what to say when someone was having a hard day.
A Community United in Grief and Love
The outpouring of support for the Helgeson family has been overwhelming, with thousands of tributes pouring in online and in local memorials. A candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday, July 29, at Mineral Springs Park in Owatonna, beginning at 8:00 p.m., where attendees are encouraged to wear purple, Hallie’s favorite color, and bring flowers, letters, or photos in her memory.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 31, at First Lutheran Church in Owatonna, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 12:00 p.m. The community is welcome to attend and help the Helgeson family celebrate the life of a girl who meant so much to so many.
A Legacy of Love and Light
Though her time on Earth was tragically brief, Hallie Helgeson’s impact was anything but small. Her kindness, laughter, and radiant spirit will live on through those who loved her and in every life she touched. In honor of Hallie’s compassionate nature, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Humane Society of Steele County or to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) — causes that reflect her love for animals and her family’s hope for safer roads.
“Some people bring a light so bright to the world, that even after they are gone, the light remains.”
Rest peacefully, Hallie.
Your light will never dim.
You are missed beyond measure and loved beyond words. 💜🕊️
