Henderson ISD Mourns the Tragic Loss of Kyla Henderson and Aubree Edney
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Henderson Independent School District (HISD) shares the devastating news of the tragic loss of Kyla Henderson, a former student, and Aubree Edney, a beloved soon-to-be sixth grader. Their passing has left a deep void in the hearts of the entire school community, as students, teachers, staff, and families grapple with the unimaginable grief of losing two cherished young lives.
Kyla Henderson, remembered by many as a bright and determined young woman, was a proud product of Henderson ISD. During her time as a student, she stood out for her strong spirit, leadership qualities, and unwavering kindness. Whether in the classroom or in extracurricular activities, Kyla brought a quiet strength and joyful presence that lifted those around her. Her teachers recall her as respectful, motivated, and full of promise — the kind of student who made a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Though no longer enrolled at HISD, Kyla remained closely connected to the school community through friends, mentors, and siblings. Her legacy continues to live on through the lives she touched and the memories she helped create. Her passing is not just a loss to her family, but to the entire school district that helped shape her into the inspiring young woman she became.
Aubree Edney, a vibrant and sweet young girl, was set to begin her sixth-grade year at HISD. She was known for her energetic spirit, her love of learning, and her ability to make everyone around her smile. Aubree had a natural curiosity and a heart full of kindness. Whether it was making new friends, helping classmates, or greeting teachers with a hug, she radiated warmth and goodness.
Her teachers and friends described her as a joyful presence — someone who loved to laugh, asked thoughtful questions, and gave the best hugs. She was creative, compassionate, and full of dreams. Aubree was excited about the upcoming school year, looking forward to new adventures, new friendships, and stepping into her next chapter.
To lose both Kyla and Aubree is an immeasurable tragedy. Their absence will be deeply felt in the halls of Henderson ISD, where their presence brought color, energy, and inspiration. Counselors and grief support teams have been made available across the district to help students, staff, and families navigate this time of sorrow.
Dr. Thurston Lamb, Superintendent of Henderson ISD, expressed the district’s collective grief:
“Our hearts are shattered. We have lost two of our own — young girls full of light, love, and potential. Kyla and Aubree brought joy into our schools, and their memory will remain part of our district forever. We stand with their families in this time of unimaginable pain and pray for comfort and peace.”
Community members have come together in the wake of this tragedy to honor and remember Kyla and Aubree. Vigils, prayer gatherings, and memorial services are being planned to celebrate their lives and to support the families during this incredibly difficult time.
Kyla and Aubree are survived by loving families, friends, classmates, and educators who will carry their memory forward. The school district has also shared its commitment to honoring their legacy by continuing to build a school community rooted in kindness, connection, and care — values that both girls embodied so beautifully.
As the HISD community mourns, there is also a deep sense of gratitude for the time spent with Kyla and Aubree — even if far too short. Their lives were full of promise, and the impact they made will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Kyla and Aubree. Your lives were precious, your light unforgettable, and your memory eternal.
