Gunfire Erupts Near Eastlake High School in Chula Vista After Teen Brawl; Police Launch Investigation
CHULA VISTA, Calif. — October 9, 2025 — The Chula Vista Police Department has launched a full-scale investigation after a violent altercation involving multiple juveniles erupted Thursday afternoon near Eastlake High School, culminating in gunfire that has left the community shaken and parents demanding answers.
Authorities responded to reports of a disturbance around 3:15 p.m., shortly after school dismissal, near the intersection of Eastlake Parkway and Clubhouse Drive, just steps from the school campus. According to initial statements from law enforcement, what began as a physical fight between several teenagers quickly escalated when one of the participants brandished a firearm and opened fire. The gunfire sent students and bystanders running for cover, while nearby businesses and residents called 911 in a panic.
When officers arrived, they found the chaotic aftermath of the confrontation — students scattering, some visibly injured, and at least one individual suffering from a gunshot wound. The wounded victim, whose identity has not yet been released due to age, was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not confirmed their current condition, though early reports indicate the injuries are serious but not immediately life-threatening.
The Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) quickly secured the area, locking down the vicinity while detectives collected shell casings, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Officers remained stationed around the school well into the evening as parents arrived to pick up their children and ensure their safety.
CVPD spokesperson Sgt. Anthony Molina described the situation as “deeply concerning,” emphasizing that the violence appeared to stem from a prearranged fight between groups of teens. “We believe this was not a random act,” Molina said. “These individuals likely knew each other, and we’re working diligently to identify everyone involved.”
As of Thursday night, police had detained several individuals for questioning and were seeking at least one additional suspect believed to have fled the scene after the shots were fired. Investigators are urging anyone with video footage or firsthand information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Eastlake community, a normally quiet and family-oriented area of Chula Vista known for its schools and suburban atmosphere. Concerned parents gathered outside the school, many expressing anger and frustration over the growing trend of youth violence in the region.
“You never think it’s going to happen here,” said one mother, her voice trembling as she clutched her daughter’s hand. “Eastlake is supposed to be safe. We shouldn’t have to worry about gunfire near our schools.”
The Sweetwater Union High School District released a statement late Thursday evening confirming that Eastlake High was not directly involved in the altercation but acknowledged that the incident’s proximity had deeply affected students and staff. The district assured families that counselors and mental health professionals would be on campus in the coming days to provide support to those who witnessed or were impacted by the violence.
Community leaders and local officials have also spoken out, calling for unity and urging residents to work together to prevent further violence. Chula Vista Mayor John McCann condemned the shooting, stating, “No child should ever fear for their safety near school grounds. We stand with the families, students, and educators affected, and we will do everything in our power to ensure accountability and safety moving forward.”
As investigators continue their work, the Chula Vista Police Department has increased patrols around Eastlake High School and surrounding neighborhoods to reassure residents. Detectives are reviewing social media posts that may shed light on the motive or identify additional participants in the brawl.
