Gallipolis Teen Killed in Suspected Drowsy-Driving Crash on I-79 in Kanawha County

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — Authorities have confirmed that 19-year-old Devan Lawson, of Gallipolis, Ohio, lost his life last week in a tragic crash on Interstate 79 that investigators believe was caused by drowsy driving.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal accident occurred in the early morning hours, when Lawson’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a guardrail before overturning. Deputies say there were no signs of excessive speed, alcohol, or drug impairment, leading investigators to suspect that fatigue played a critical role in the crash.

Emergency responders were dispatched immediately after multiple 911 calls reported the single-vehicle accident. Despite their efforts to save him, Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Friends and family describe Devan as a bright and ambitious young man who was just beginning to step into adulthood. Known for his kindness, humor, and unwavering loyalty to those close to him, he had a gift for making others feel valued and appreciated. Loved ones say his sudden loss is “unimaginable” and that the world feels emptier without his presence.

Law enforcement officials are using this tragedy as a solemn reminder of the dangers of driving while fatigued. They note that drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving, as it slows reaction time, decreases awareness, and can cause drivers to nod off behind the wheel without warning.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash but says the case serves as an urgent call for drivers to prioritize rest before getting behind the wheel, especially during long trips or late-night hours.

As the Gallipolis community mourns the loss of a promising young life, friends have begun organizing vigils and memorial gatherings to honor Devan’s memory. His passing leaves behind a grieving family and a circle of friends who will forever cherish the moments they shared with him.

In the words of one close friend, “Devan’s light was bright, but it went out far too soon. We’ll carry his memory with us always.”
