Five Shot in Two Hours: Overnight Gunfire Erupts Across Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — A chaotic stretch of violence shook Indianapolis late Sunday night into early Monday morning, as five people were shot in a string of separate incidents that unfolded within a span of just two hours. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the shootings took place between approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday and 1:00 a.m. Monday, leaving multiple individuals injured and entire neighborhoods rattled by the rapid succession of gunfire.

Authorities say the violence began shortly before midnight when officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of North Wittfield Street on the city’s east side. There, a man in his 30s was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The area, typically quiet and residential, was cordoned off as investigators searched for evidence and potential witnesses.

Less than 30 minutes later, at approximately 12:05 a.m., IMPD responded to another shooting—this time in the 2100 block of North Kenyon Street. Officers arrived to find a woman in her 20s who had been shot while sitting in a vehicle. She was also taken to the hospital, listed in critical condition. Investigators believe the woman may have been caught in the crossfire during an apparent exchange of gunfire between two unknown individuals. No suspects have been identified in that case.

Just minutes after the second shooting, at 12:25 a.m., a third call came in reporting shots fired on the near northwest side near West 29th Street and Barnes Avenue. Police found a teenage male victim who had been shot in the leg while walking home. He told police he heard gunfire and ran, only realizing he had been struck after reaching his front porch. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

As officers were still processing the third scene, gunfire erupted again—this time near East 38th Street and North Sherman Drive. Two men were shot in what police described as a dispute that escalated into violence in a gas station parking lot. Witnesses told investigators that a verbal altercation turned physical before shots rang out. Both men, ages 25 and 31, were taken to local hospitals—one in critical condition, the other stable.

IMPD has not confirmed whether any of the shootings are connected, but the close timing and geographic proximity of the incidents have raised concerns among residents and law enforcement officials alike. In a statement early Monday morning, an IMPD spokesperson called the rash of shootings “deeply troubling” and said detectives are working diligently to identify suspects and determine motives.

“Gun violence continues to plague our neighborhoods and devastate families,” the spokesperson said. “We are urging anyone with information about any of these incidents to come forward. Community cooperation is vital in helping us solve these crimes and hold those responsible accountable.”

As of Monday morning, no arrests had been made in any of the cases, and police had not released the names of the victims. Crime scene units spent hours combing through the multiple scenes, collecting shell casings, surveillance footage, and witness statements. The investigation remains ongoing.

The spate of shootings adds to an already violent summer in Indianapolis, which has seen a troubling uptick in gun-related incidents. Community leaders and anti-violence advocates are renewing calls for urgent intervention, increased youth engagement, and stronger efforts to address the root causes of crime.

“This level of violence cannot become our norm,” said Reverend Charles Winfield, a local faith leader who works with at-risk youth. “We need real investment in our communities, mental health support, jobs, and programs that offer people hope and a path away from the streets.”

As families wake up to the news of another night of bloodshed, the city remains on edge. IMPD continues to urge anyone with tips or footage related to the shootings to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS. A reward may be offered for information leading to arrests.
