Dr. David W. Altchek, Renowned Sports Medicine Pioneer and HSS Icon, Dies at 69

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. David W. Altchek, a towering figure in the field of sports medicine, who departed this life in July 2025. A founding force and longtime orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, Dr. Altchek leaves behind a legacy marked by groundbreaking medical innovation, compassionate care, and an unwavering dedication to excellence. His passing is an immeasurable loss not only to his family and colleagues, but also to the global sports and medical communities who revered his expertise and admired his integrity.

For decades, Dr. Altchek was at the forefront of orthopedic surgery, specializing in injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee—especially those afflicting elite athletes. He served as the Medical Director for the New York Mets, and was a trusted physician for numerous professional and Olympic athletes across a wide range of sports. His surgical hands repaired the careers of some of the world’s top competitors, but it was his calm presence, steady judgment, and genuine concern for his patients’ overall well-being that truly set him apart.

Colleagues remember Dr. Altchek as a visionary clinician, a brilliant mind who combined deep anatomical understanding with forward-thinking surgical techniques. He was a gifted teacher who mentored countless medical students, residents, and fellows, many of whom have gone on to lead departments and clinics of their own. His name became synonymous with clinical excellence, and his contributions to orthopedic literature and surgical best practices are studied and cited around the world.

Though his accomplishments were numerous—authoring dozens of scientific publications, receiving prestigious honors, holding leadership positions in professional organizations—Dr. Altchek remained deeply humble. He never sought the spotlight, preferring instead to focus on his patients, his students, and the evolving art and science of orthopedic medicine. At HSS, he was more than just a colleague; he was a cornerstone of the institution’s identity, someone who elevated everyone around him with quiet strength and unwavering standards.

Beyond his operating room brilliance, Dr. Altchek was a devoted husband, father, and friend. Those closest to him knew a man who was deeply loyal, intellectually curious, and remarkably grounded. He had a warm sense of humor, a genuine interest in others, and a rare ability to remain calm and confident in even the most stressful situations.

To the countless athletes who returned to their sport because of his care, to the students who carry on his surgical techniques, and to the friends and family who cherished him—Dr. Altchek was more than a doctor. He was a healer, a mentor, a leader, and a man of uncommon grace.

His passing leaves behind a profound void, not only in the corridors of HSS, but in locker rooms, lecture halls, and operating theaters across the world. Dr. David W. Altchek’s legacy, however, will endure—in the lives he saved, the careers he restored, the knowledge he shared, and the humanity he modeled.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren, all of whom were his greatest pride and joy. To them, and to the thousands who had the privilege of working alongside him, we extend our deepest condolences.

May his memory be a blessing, and may his contributions continue to inspire generations of physicians to come.
