Dr. Austin Obasohan, Superintendent of Duplin County Schools, Dies Suddenly; Community Honors Legacy of Beloved Leader and Educator

Dr. Austin Obasohan served as Superintendent of Duplin County Schools (DCS) from July 2010 until his passing on July 24, 2025, guiding the district for over 15 years. In his tenure, he brought transformative leadership grounded in faith, purpose, and a deep belief in education as a calling.

Originally from Nigeria, Dr. Obasohan infused his leadership with a global perspective and humbleness that resonated with everyone around him. He often referred to students as “God’s most precious gifts” and saw education as a way to empower them for future success.

Transformative Vision: STEAMA & District Revitalization

Under his leadership, DCS consolidated from 16 to 13 schools to better serve students. He spearheaded the adoption of STEAMA—an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Agriculture framework—designed to foster personalized learning pathways and prepare students for college, careers, and life.

Dr. Obasohan strengthened partnerships with local institutions like James Sprunt Community College and brought early college programs into district schools to broaden access to post-secondary opportunities.

Guided by empathy and humility, he preferred a servant leadership style. The Duplin County Board of Education praised his leadership as uplifting and inclusive:

“His leadership was never one of command, but of service … through his kindness, wisdom and humility, he touched the lives of each of us, creating an environment where we could all thrive … as ‘One Family.

Impact Beyond Academics

Dr. Obasohan’s vision extended beyond test scores. He championed restoring respect for the teaching profession and recognized educators’ multi-faceted roles—as mentors, counselors, and caregivers. He advocated tirelessly for recruiting and retaining dedicated, high-quality staff.

His compassionate leadership anchored the district through difficult challenges, including the COVID‑19 pandemic, building strong connections with families and community stakeholders to support student learning and well-being.

A Man of Character and Community

Described as calm, gracious, and empathetic, Dr. Obasohan made everyone feel seen and valued. He volunteered extensively—participating in mental health awareness campaigns, community advocacy, and youth development efforts. His passionate dedication left an indelible mark across Duplin County.

Colleagues and loved ones recall his quiet strength and heartfelt commitment to service: he led by example and expected nothing in return.

Words from the Board of Education

Board Chair Brent Davis conveyed the district’s grief:

“We are all truly saddened … He was such an amazing leader and wonderful person. He will be missed.”

Remembering a Personal Story of Resilience

Born in 1959 in the small farming village of Nifor, Nigeria, Dr. Obasohan was the eldest of seven children. His journey reflected perseverance and academic excellence—earning undergraduate credentials in the UK and advanced degrees in the U.S., including a doctorate from Appalachian State University and graduate degrees from Virginia State University.

He came to Duplin County after serving as superintendent of Selma City Schools in Alabama. Through his global upbringing and experiences, he brought both vision and humility to every role he held.

He is survived by his wife, Uyiosa Obasohan, and their three children: daughter Modesty, and sons Justice and Trust. His family was the foundation of his strength and inspiration.

Honoring His Legacy & Carrying His Vision Forward

Plans for a memorial service to celebrate Dr. Obasohan’s life are forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family may invite contributions to a local educational scholarship or a cause reflective of his values in equity and access.

As Duplin County mourns, we also celebrate a leader whose compassion, wisdom, and vision transformed lives. His legacy lives on in the hearts of students, staff, families, and the broader community he served.
