He tragically died in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, July 19, 2025, near Sylvan Lake State Park, when the vehicle he was driving veered off the road and rolled over. Although the passenger survived with serious injuries, Derrick did not survive the crash.

Derrick was widely known across the Vail Valley as an athletic adventurer and a devoted steward of the outdoors. He served as the golf course superintendent at Frost Creek Country Club, where he was highly respected for his work ethic and deep connection to the land.
