Louisville Man Jamar Douglas, 26, Killed in Owen County Shooting; Suspect Charged with Murder

MONTEREY, Ky. — Authorities have confirmed that 26-year-old Jamar Douglas, of Louisville, has died following a shooting in Owen County, a tragedy that has shocked both his family and the small community of Monterey. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Gary Bullion of Ghent, has been taken into custody and charged with murder, assault, and other related offenses.

According to the Owen County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene on Friday evening in the 200 block of U.S. Highway 127 after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Douglas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rendered aid at the scene before transporting him to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not released full details about what led to the shooting but said that preliminary findings point to an altercation between Douglas and Bullion prior to the gunfire. Authorities have not confirmed the nature of the dispute or whether the two men knew each other before the incident.

Bullion was arrested without further incident and is currently being held in the Carroll County Detention Center. In addition to the murder charge, he faces counts of first-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Court records show that his first appearance before a judge is scheduled for early next week.

The news of Douglas’s death has left his loved ones reeling. Friends describe him as a kind-hearted and hardworking man who was deeply devoted to his family. “Jamar had a big heart—he’d give you the shirt off his back,” one friend shared. “It’s so hard to believe he’s gone.”

Residents of the tight-knit Monterey community expressed sadness and frustration over the violence. “This isn’t something we see often in our small town,” said a local shop owner. “It’s devastating, and our hearts go out to his family.”

The Kentucky State Police is assisting local investigators in collecting evidence, speaking with witnesses, and piecing together the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact law enforcement.

As the investigation continues, Jamar Douglas’s family is preparing to lay him to rest while also seeking justice for his untimely death. Community members are planning a candlelight vigil in his memory, hoping to honor his life and stand against the violence that took it away.

For many in both Louisville and Monterey, the loss of Jamar Douglas is not just a personal tragedy—it is a stark reminder of how quickly lives can be shattered by gun violence.
