Around 2:45 p.m., a major traffic incident occurred near the intersection of State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, just steps from the bustling Wiregrass Mall — a popular destination for families, students, and shoppers across Pasco County.
The crash, described by authorities as one of the most devastating in recent memory for the area, involved a high-speed collision that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a black Dodge Charger traveling eastbound at an excessive rate of speed lost control while attempting to weave through congested lanes of traffic. The vehicle crossed the median and slammed head-on into a silver SUV traveling westbound.
The impact was catastrophic. The SUV was sent spinning into a nearby utility pole, while the Charger continued on its path, striking a traffic light post and narrowly missing a crowded pedestrian crosswalk. Tragically, the driver of the SUV — a 38-year-old mother of two from Land O’ Lakes — was pronounced dead at the scene.
