Evansville Mourns Jon Andrew Fehrenbacher, 66, Lost in Tragic Ohio River Boating Accident

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Vanderburgh County Coroner has identified Jon Andrew Fehrenbacher, 66, of Evansville, as the man whose body was recovered in the Ohio River following the discovery of an unmanned boat near Dogtown Boat Ramp on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. Authorities say no foul play is suspected as investigations continue .


🕯️ The Incident

  • On Wednesday afternoon near 5 p.m., emergency crews responded to a report of an empty boat floating on the Ohio River near the Dogtown Boat Ramp .

  • Inside the vessel, only personal items were found. No life jacket was worn by Fehrenbacher when discovered .

  • His body was found the following morning at around 9:30 a.m., approximately half a mile downstream from where the boat was located .


💔 Tribute to Jon Andrew

Born on September 29, 1958, Jon Andrew lived his life in Evansville, surrounded by loved ones and dear friends. On Thursday, July 31, 2025, he passed away as the result of the accident on the Ohio River 

He is remembered as a devoted husband, cherished father and grandfather, compassionate son, and loyal brother. He is survived by his wife Patty; children Amanda (Patrick Craig) and Lee (Sara Fehrenbacher); grandchildren Charlie, Chesney, Liam, Logan, and Lucas; his brother Melvin Jr.; and other loving family members .

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the St. Wendel Commandery in Wadesville, Indiana .

Indiana DNR Public Information Officer Joe Haywood emphasized the critical importance of wearing life jackets:

“If you can’t swim or if you’re not comfortable on the water, wearing life jackets saves lives—but you actually have to wear them, not just have them in the boat.”
