BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The city of Birmingham is mourning the tragic loss of Lorenzo Davis Jr., a 17-year-old boy whose life was senselessly cut short in a late-night shooting on Thursday, July 31, 2025. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the Collegeville neighborhood of north Birmingham—a community now grappling with shock, sorrow, and unanswered questions.

A Life Full of Promise, Cut Short

Lorenzo, known affectionately as “Zo” to his family and friends, was a bright and charismatic young man with his whole life ahead of him. A student, athlete, brother, and beloved son, Lorenzo was the kind of young man who left an impression wherever he went. Friends recall his infectious laugh, his love for football, and his ability to light up a room even on its darkest days.

“He had a good heart,” said a family member. “He made mistakes like any teenager, but he was growing. He wanted better for himself and for his family. He didn’t deserve this.”

Teachers and classmates at Jackson-Olin High School described him as respectful, full of energy, and full of potential. He had dreams of pursuing a career in sports or music, and often talked about helping his mother and younger siblings when he got older. “He was always talking about making it big one day—about doing things the right way,” said a close friend. “He just wanted a chance.”

A Community in Mourning

The Collegeville neighborhood, already familiar with the trauma of gun violence, is left reeling from yet another senseless tragedy involving a young life. Community leaders and local activists have renewed calls for increased youth engagement, mental health resources, and conflict resolution programs. For them, Lorenzo’s death is a painful reminder of the urgent need for intervention and change.

“Too many of our young people are dying before they even get the chance to live,” said one local pastor. “This has to stop. We owe our children more than this.”

A candlelight vigil is being organized by family and community members in memory of Lorenzo. The event will be held at [location TBA], where attendees will honor his life with prayer, music, and shared stories. Balloons will be released in his memory—a symbol of the light and joy he brought into the world.

A Plea for Justice and Support

The Davis family is now facing unimaginable grief as they prepare to lay their son to rest. They have asked for privacy and prayers during this time but have also expressed a desire for justice—and for Lorenzo’s name not to become just another statistic.

“We won’t stop until we know what happened to our baby,” his mother said tearfully. “He mattered. He had a name, a life, a future. Somebody out there knows something. Please speak up.”
