Renowned Canadian Documentary Pioneer Debbie Nightingale of Toronto Passes Away After Brave Battle with Cancer

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Debbie (Deborah) Nightingale, who died on July 10, 2025, at the age of 71, following a courageous battle with cancer. Debbie was a pioneering force in the Canadian documentary community and a beloved figure in her personal life.

A Founding Force Behind Hot Docs

Debbie Nightingale co-founded the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 1993 alongside Paul Jay. As the festival’s first manager, she played a pivotal role in its inception, from raising initial funds to establishing its reputation both locally and internationally. Her efforts were instrumental in transforming Hot Docs into North America’s largest documentary festival. Paul Jay remarked, “Without Debbie, there wouldn’t be a Hot Docs.”

A Passion for Storytelling and Mentorship

Beyond her administrative achievements, Debbie was deeply committed to the art of documentary filmmaking. She served as an executive producer for several notable projects, including the documentary Quality Balls: The David Steinberg Story (2013) and the comedy series Living in Your Car (2010), which earned her a Gemini nomination.

Embracing a New Chapter: Haute Goat

In 2007, Debbie and her partner, Shain Jaffe, relocated from Toronto to Campbellford and later to Port Hope, where they established Haute Goat, a farm and tourist attraction known for its Nigerian dwarf goats, alpacas, and Icelandic horses. The farm became famous for its “shmurgle,” a playful interaction with the goats that combined cuddling and walking. Debbie embraced this new lifestyle, balancing farm duties with her ongoing professional endeavors.

A Life Well Lived

Debbie is survived by her partner, Shain Jaffe, three children, two stepchildren, and numerous animals that she cherished deeply. Her legacy lives on through her contributions to the documentary community and her dedication to animal welfare.

Memorial Information

A memorial service to celebrate Debbie’s life will be held at Allison Funeral Home in Port Hope. Details regarding the service and any memorial funds will be shared as they become available.

Debbie Nightingale’s passing marks the end of an era in the Canadian documentary scene. Her vision, passion, and kindness have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed but never forgotten
