Community Grieves the Loss
The loss of Lamar has deeply affected the community. Camp Wildcraft, which had relocated to King Gillette Ranch due to wildfire threats in Pacific Palisades, is now the site of a memorial for Lamar. Campers, staff, and local residents have come together to honor his memory, leaving flowers and messages of condolence at the site
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), which manages the park, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. In a statement, MRCA Executive Officer Joseph T. Edmiston said, “We are devastated by the tragic loss of a young child at a summer camp at King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow. Our hearts are with the child’s family, friends, and all those affected by this unimaginable tragedy” .
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Authorities are investigating the cause of the oak tree branch’s sudden failure. While such incidents are rare, they raise questions about the safety of large trees in public spaces, especially during periods of drought or other environmental stresses. The MRCA has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation and to review safety protocols to prevent future tragedies .
