In Loving Memory: Maggie Wilkes of Mount Pleasant, SC, Passes Away at 39
With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, the community of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, mourns the untimely passing of Maggie Wilkes, who departed this life on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the age of 39. Her sudden departure has left a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Born on February 3, 1986, in Charleston, South Carolina, Maggie was the beloved daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Wilkes. She grew up in a loving home that fostered her warm spirit, sharp intellect, and compassionate heart. From a young age, it was clear that Maggie was destined to make a difference in the lives of others.
A proud graduate of Wando High School, Maggie went on to earn a degree in Education from the College of Charleston, where she developed a deep passion for teaching and mentorship. For more than 15 years, she served as an elementary school teacher in the Charleston County School District, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to shaping young minds. Her classroom was a place of warmth, creativity, and encouragement — a true reflection of her character.
Maggie was not only a devoted educator, but also a deeply involved member of her community. She volunteered with local youth programs, organized neighborhood food drives, and was an active member of Grace Church Cathedral in Charleston, where she sang in the choir and participated in outreach missions. She was the kind of person who never turned away from someone in need and who found joy in lifting others up.
Those closest to Maggie describe her as a beacon of light — someone who radiated kindness and had an uncanny ability to make people feel seen, heard, and loved. Her laughter was infectious, her advice always thoughtful, and her presence a true gift. Whether she was helping a student through a tough time, comforting a friend, or simply enjoying a sunset on Sullivan’s Island, Maggie brought meaning to the moment.
She is survived by her loving parents, Thomas and Eleanor Wilkes; her younger brother, Andrew Wilkes and his wife Danielle; her two nieces, Clara and Jane, whom she adored beyond words; and countless friends, former students, and colleagues who are forever changed by her love and legacy.
The family has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received during this painful time. In a statement, they wrote:
“Maggie was the heart of our family. Her compassion, wisdom, and love knew no bounds. She lived each day with purpose and grace. While our sorrow is immense, we find comfort in knowing how many lives she touched and how her spirit will continue to live on in each of us.”
A celebration of Maggie’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at Grace Church Cathedral, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. All who knew and loved Maggie are welcome to attend and share in remembering the beautiful soul she was.
In lieu of flowers, the Wilkes family has requested donations be made to the Charleston Hope Foundation — a nonprofit dedicated to improving education for underserved schools — in Maggie’s honor.
Though her time with us was far too short, Maggie Wilkes leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and unwavering love. Her life was a testament to the power of gentle strength and selfless service. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
