Incident Details

According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded to a call from UNC Rex Hospital following reports of a violent and biohazard-related assault involving a patient. Upon investigation, law enforcement learned that Gilchrist, who was receiving treatment at the hospital, became agitated and aggressive toward medical personnel.

Authorities allege that during a confrontation, Gilchrist intentionally sprayed his own blood — known to be HIV-positive — into the faces and eyes of two hospital staff members, exposing them to potential infection. The employees, both members of the medical care team, were immediately provided with emergency decontamination and post-exposure prophylaxis treatments to reduce the risk of transmission.
