The city of Alton, Illinois is in mourning following the heartbreaking and senseless death of 17-year-old Shabrya L. Hudson, who was fatally shot on July 4th—Independence Day—in what should have been a day of celebration. Instead, the community is now grappling with grief, disbelief, and a deep sense of loss after the tragedy that unfolded at the Oakwood Estates Housing Complex.

On Tuesday, July 8, the Alton Police Department, along with the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, announced that Joshua L. Glen-Colley, an 18-year-old resident of Alton, has been formally charged in connection with the fatal shooting. The charges include first-degree murder, and Glen-Colley is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the Oakwood Estates complex on the night of July 4th, following reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they discovered Shabrya Hudson suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders and emergency medical personnel, she tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Shabrya’s sudden and violent death has sent shockwaves throughout the city. A vibrant, intelligent, and deeply loved young woman, she had her entire life ahead of her. Described by friends and family as ambitious, compassionate, and full of life, Shabrya was a student with dreams of going to college, pursuing a career, and making a positive impact on the world.

Her loved ones are devastated. “She was the light in any room she walked into,” said a family member. “She was sweet, respectful, always helping others. Our hearts are broken. We’re not just mourning her death—we’re mourning everything she could’ve become.”

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation, and while law enforcement has not publicly disclosed a motive, officials have assured the public that they are committed to uncovering every detail of what happened that night. Surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence are all being thoroughly reviewed.

In the meantime, community leaders and residents are rallying around the Hudson family, organizing candlelight vigils, offering support, and calling for an end to the gun violence that continues to plague cities across the nation. The tragedy has also reignited urgent conversations around youth violence, access to firearms, and mental health support for teenagers.

Alton Mayor and city officials released a joint statement expressing their sorrow:
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Shabrya L. Hudson. Our prayers are with her family, friends, and everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence. We must work together as a community to ensure our children are safe and have the opportunities they deserve to live full and meaningful lives.”

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help cover funeral expenses and provide support to the Hudson family during this unimaginable time. Community members have also begun laying flowers, photos, and handwritten notes at a growing memorial outside the Oakwood Estates complex.

As the legal process begins for Joshua Glen-Colley, the Alton community is left grieving the life of a young woman taken far too soon. Shabrya’s memory now lives on in the hearts of those she touched, and her tragic death serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for healing, accountability, and change.

Rest in peace, Shabrya L. Hudson. Your light was dimmed far too soon, but your spirit will never be forgotten.
