23-Year-Old Banwari Godara Identified as Victim in Deadly Northwest Fresno Shooting
Fresno, CA — Authorities have identified the man fatally shot over the weekend in northwest Fresno as 23-year-old Banwari Godara, a young man whose life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Godara, who had recently relocated to Fresno from his hometown of San Jose in search of new opportunities, died Saturday night following a shooting that also left another man injured.
According to the Fresno Police Department, officers were called to the scene near Herndon and Milburn avenues around 10:45 p.m. Saturday after multiple reports of gunfire in the area. When officers arrived, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed both victims to a nearby hospital, where Godara succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The second victim, whose name has not been released, is expected to survive.
Investigators say the shooting appears to have occurred during an altercation, though the exact motive remains unclear. Detectives are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses who may have seen or heard anything unusual before or after the gunfire. No suspects have been publicly identified, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes stated that the case is being treated as an active homicide investigation. “Our detectives are working diligently to determine what led up to this tragic event,” he said. “We’re asking the community to assist us in any way they can to help bring justice for Mr. Godara and his family.”
Friends and loved ones have expressed shock and heartbreak over Godara’s sudden death. Those who knew him described him as ambitious, kind, and full of life — a young man who had only recently begun building his future in Fresno. On social media, tributes poured in from friends in both Fresno and San Jose, remembering him as someone who always had a smile and a generous spirit.
One longtime friend wrote, “Banwari was a loyal friend and a bright soul. He had big dreams and so much ahead of him. It’s just devastating to lose him like this.” Others have shared photos and memories, calling for peace and justice while urging an end to the rising gun violence that continues to impact communities across California’s Central Valley.
As the investigation continues, Fresno residents are once again grappling with the painful aftermath of another fatal shooting — a reminder of the toll that violence takes on families and neighborhoods. Community leaders have called for unity, compassion, and collaboration with law enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
A GoFundMe page has reportedly been established to help support funeral expenses and assist Godara’s grieving family as they navigate the days ahead.
