Two Killed, Several Injured in Indianapolis Mass Shooting Involving Juveniles and Adults
Indianapolis, IN – July 6, 2025
A devastating mass shooting early Saturday morning in Indianapolis has left two people dead and multiple others injured, including both juveniles and adults, prompting a widespread investigation and renewed calls for action against the rising tide of gun violence in the city.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the incident occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. near the 3700 block of North Emerson Avenue, in a residential area on the city’s northeast side. Officers responding to reports of multiple shots fired discovered a chaotic scene with several victims lying on the ground and others seeking help from bystanders and emergency crews.
Two individuals—one believed to be a juvenile and the other an adult—were pronounced dead at the scene. The Marion County Coroner’s Office is working to formally identify the deceased and notify their families. At least five others were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Their ages have not yet been confirmed, but authorities say the victims include both teenagers and young adults.
The shooting reportedly occurred during what officials described as a “large, unsanctioned gathering” that drew dozens of people, many of them underage. Eyewitnesses reported hearing an argument break out before gunfire erupted, sending people scrambling for cover and cars speeding away from the scene.
“People were running everywhere,” said one nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous. “I heard at least 15 or 20 shots. It was chaos. I saw young kids, maybe high school age, crying and trying to help each other. It was terrifying.”
As of Sunday morning, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. IMPD homicide detectives and crime scene investigators remained at the scene throughout the early morning hours, collecting shell casings and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses. Detectives have confirmed the use of multiple firearms in the shooting, though they have not disclosed how many shooters may have been involved.
“This level of violence is horrifying and unacceptable,” said IMPD Chief Randal Taylor in a press briefing. “We are throwing every available resource at this investigation. We need the community’s help to identify those responsible and to put an end to this senseless violence.”
Chief Taylor also confirmed that local schools and youth outreach organizations have been notified of the involvement of minors in the incident and are working to provide support services to affected families.
Saturday’s mass shooting is the latest in a troubling string of violent incidents that have gripped Indianapolis in recent months, many of them involving young people. City leaders and community advocates are now calling for immediate action—both in addressing gun access among minors and in creating safer spaces for youth.
“We cannot normalize this,” said City-County Councilor La Keisha Jackson, who represents the district where the shooting occurred. “These are our children. These are our neighbors. We have to do more than offer thoughts and prayers. We need solutions, and we need them now.”
In response to the tragedy, a community vigil is being planned for Sunday evening at a nearby church. Clergy members, families, and local officials are expected to speak and offer support to those affected.
Community organizations such as Stop the Violence Indianapolis and the Indiana Youth Group have also mobilized, offering trauma support services and calling on city leaders to invest in long-term violence prevention strategies, including mentorship programs, youth employment initiatives, and stricter gun control measures.
“This is not just a police issue,” said Rev. Charles Harris, a longtime anti-violence advocate. “This is a moral issue. We are losing our future—our children—because of easy access to guns, broken systems, and a lack of safe alternatives.”
The IMPD urges anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477). A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
As families mourn and the city searches for answers, the names of the victims—still to be officially released—will soon become yet another reminder of the heavy cost of inaction in the face of violence. For Indianapolis, this weekend has brought not only tragedy, but also a renewed urgency to change the trajectory for its youth—and for the community as a whole.
