Toledo Police Investigate Deadly Double Shooting on Baden Street
TOLEDO, OH — July 5, 2025
A violent and unsettling scene unfolded Friday evening in a Toledo neighborhood as police responded to a double shooting on Baden Street, launching an active investigation that has left residents shaken and authorities working to piece together the sequence of events.
According to the Toledo Police Department (TPD), officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Baden just before 7:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire and possible injuries. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds in front of a residence. A white forensic sheet was seen covering one of the victims, indicating a fatality.
One Dead, One Hospitalized
Police confirmed that one of the victims — an adult male — was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, also an adult male, was transported to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet released the names of either individual pending family notification.
The area was quickly cordoned off with police tape, and a white sheet was placed over the deceased as homicide detectives, crime scene investigators, and officers canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and evidence. The incident drew a large crowd of residents, many of whom expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden burst of violence on what had been a calm summer evening.
An Active and Ongoing Investigation
As of Saturday morning, police have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect in the shooting. Investigators were seen going door to door, speaking with potential witnesses and collecting surveillance footage from nearby homes. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and TPD has not ruled out any possibilities, including gang involvement or a personal dispute.
“We are doing everything we can to determine exactly what led to this senseless violence,” said Lt. Jordan Henley, a spokesperson for Toledo Police. “We urge anyone with information — even if it seems small — to come forward and assist in this investigation.”
Community Reaction
The shooting has rattled the Baden Street neighborhood, a community already familiar with the painful reality of gun violence. Several residents described hearing a series of rapid gunshots followed by shouting and chaos.
“It was like firecrackers at first,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified. “Then I looked out the window and saw people running and someone laying in the street. I just started praying.”
Local community leaders have voiced frustration and grief, urging the city to take stronger action to address rising gun violence and improve access to conflict resolution and youth outreach services.
“This isn’t just about two people getting shot,” said Rev. Marcus Lyle, a longtime anti-violence advocate. “It’s about another family losing someone they love. It’s about the trauma kids in this neighborhood live with every day. We need to come together and stop this cycle.”
Police Call for Public Help
Toledo Police are asking anyone with information related to the shooting — whether they heard something, saw something, or may have security camera footage — to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111 or submit tips anonymously online.
“This case won’t be solved in silence,” Lt. Henley added. “Someone out there knows something, and now is the time to speak up.”
Larger Context
The double shooting on Baden comes amid a troubling rise in gun violence across Toledo. According to recent police data, shootings in the city have increased nearly 15% compared to this time last year, with many of the incidents involving repeat offenders or unresolved personal disputes.
In response, the city has pledged to ramp up community policing efforts and increase funding for violence intervention programs. But for many residents, the pain of watching another life lost on their street is immediate and all too familiar.
As the investigation continues, police have assured the public that additional patrols will be present in the area to provide reassurance and to deter further violence. The name of the deceased victim, the condition of the surviving individual, and further investigative details are expected to be released in the coming days.
The Toledo community now waits for answers — and for justice
