Beloved Albany Woman Patricia “Pat” Duncan Fatally Shot in Leonard Neighborhood, Community Demands Justice
Albany, GA — The Albany community is grappling with pain, disbelief, and growing outrage following the tragic killing of a beloved woman affectionately known as Patricia Duncan, or “Pat,” in the Leonard neighborhood.
On the evening of July 2, 2025, emergency responders were dispatched to a home in the close-knit Leonard neighborhood following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, Albany Police Department officers discovered Patricia Duncan, 61, unresponsive from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The senseless act of violence that stole her life has left a deep wound in a neighborhood where she was known as a beacon of warmth, generosity, and kindness.
Pat, as everyone called her, was a lifelong resident of Albany. She had raised her family in the Leonard neighborhood, and over the decades, became a trusted matriarch not only to her relatives but also to many friends, neighbors, and even strangers. Whether she was bringing hot meals to sick neighbors, volunteering at her local church, or simply offering a smile and listening ear, Pat’s presence brought comfort and compassion to countless lives.
As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been made, and police say the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are seeking the public’s help for any information that may lead to the apprehension of the person or persons responsible. Investigators have not yet released a motive but have confirmed that multiple leads are being pursued. Community members are being urged to come forward, especially those who may have security footage or who witnessed anything suspicious near the area of the crime.
News of Pat’s death has prompted widespread sorrow and frustration among residents. Candlelight vigils have already begun forming at the site of the tragedy, where flowers, photos, and handwritten messages cover the sidewalk in a makeshift memorial. Her death marks another heartbreaking chapter in the city’s battle against rising gun violence—particularly in neighborhoods already facing economic and social challenges.
“She didn’t deserve this. Miss Pat looked out for everybody,” said neighbor Linda James, wiping away tears. “If you needed a meal, a ride, a prayer—she was there. This community has lost a mother.”
Mayor Bo Dorough issued a statement expressing condolences and affirming the city’s support for the ongoing investigation. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Patricia Duncan, a woman whose love and service touched many in Albany. We urge anyone with information to come forward and help us find justice.”
Pat is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, and a large extended family who are struggling to process the tragedy. Funeral arrangements are being finalized, and a community memorial is expected to be held in the coming week.
