Workplace Shooting at Baldwyn FXI Plant Leaves One Critically Injured; Co-Worker in Custody

BALDWYN, Miss — July 2, 2025 — A disturbing and violent altercation between two employees at the FXI furniture manufacturing plant in Baldwyn, Mississippi, ended in a tragic shooting Wednesday night, leaving one man in critical condition after being shot in the head, according to the Baldwyn Police Department.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the FXI facility, located along Highway 45, a major thoroughfare in the town. Authorities responded to 911 calls reporting gunfire and a man lying on the pavement with a severe head injury. Emergency services rushed the victim to a nearby trauma center, where he remains in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

🔍 A Dispute Turns Deadly

Police officials confirmed that the shooting stemmed from an escalating argument between two male employees of the factory, both of whom were on shift earlier that evening. Witnesses reported that the confrontation began inside the plant and spilled into the parking lot after their shifts ended.

“What started as a verbal altercation between co-workers tragically escalated into gun violence,” said Police Chief Troy Agnew during a Thursday press briefing. “One individual pulled out a firearm and shot the other in the head at close range.”

The identities of both the victim and the suspect have not yet been released pending family notification and ongoing investigation. However, police have confirmed that the shooter remained on scene and was taken into custody without resistance by responding officers.

🚔 Suspect in Custody, Charges Pending

The suspect, who was immediately detained, is currently being held at the Lee County Adult Detention Center. Investigators have recovered the weapon used in the shooting and are working to determine whether the gun was legally owned and brought to the workplace intentionally.

Charges are expected to include:

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

  • Possession of a firearm on business premises

  • Attempted murder

District Attorney Michael Atwood confirmed that the suspect will appear before a judge later this week for a bond hearing, with additional charges possible based on the victim’s condition.

🏭 FXI Plant Responds

The FXI plant, a prominent employer in the Baldwyn area known for producing foam products for furniture and bedding, issued a brief statement acknowledging the incident:

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the events that occurred at our Baldwyn facility. Our thoughts are with the injured employee and their family. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and have closed the plant temporarily while we assist in the investigation.”

Employees arriving for overnight and early morning shifts Thursday were turned away as company officials and police secured the scene and began reviewing surveillance footage from the parking lot and surrounding areas.

💬 Community Reaction

The incident has rattled the small town of Baldwyn, a tight-knit community where violence of this nature is rare.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Janice Rogers, a nearby resident whose son works at the FXI plant. “These are people who work hard every day just to make a living. You don’t expect something like this to happen between co-workers.”

Counseling and crisis services are reportedly being made available to FXI employees who may have witnessed the confrontation or are affected by the shooting.

📢 Ongoing Investigation

The Baldwyn Police Department, in conjunction with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities are also reviewing whether any prior complaints or incidents between the two employees were reported to plant management.

Chief Agnew urged anyone with information or footage related to the shooting to come forward.

“This is a tragic situation, and we are committed to understanding every aspect of what led up to it. We also want to ensure that justice is served.”

As the Baldwyn community grapples with the shock and trauma of Wednesday night’s violence, attention now turns to supporting the injured victim and ensuring measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
